I think that is a perfect explanation. I believe your boss is stuck in the exempt/non-exempt paradigm, and I don't envy you trying to get him out of it.

Re: How to Measure Results

Sorry for the re-post. Forgot to login on the previous one.
Without knowing your specific business or work product all I can offer is what I ahve seen in the past. Programmers are usually, in my experience, working on projects. If you have a project, or group of projects, that you are working on, that is your results orientation. You have milestones to meet in the process which makes it "results only". If you can meet the milestones for this week, then you are free to schedule youtr time accordinagly. Measure it by milestones in the project.

I actually gave them the portion you could download for free to gauge their interest. The trick is now getting them to read it. working with nurses can be a challenge! ;)

It is very distressing to read things like this article (I get this magazine at work as well and was shocked to read it). The control some companies want to put on their work force is unbelievable to me, but with the state of economy and the 6% unemployment the power is in the companies hands at the moment. True change is just starting, so I am sure nothing will happen significantly in our personal work lifespan, but perhaps we can be the catalyst for the next generation, who seem to be in this mind set already.

I don't understand what the issue with the language was in the previous poster's review. I have never considered the term "Sucks" as "cussing", but I guess that's a personal issue. I enjoyed how the book was worded. It spoke to people lile MOST of us speak to each other, without the blinders of PC. Well written and well stated. Now, to get people to buy in is the hard part. :)

The main issue I have is the last minute requests for information and data reports. Even with our attempt to streamline and put systems in place to control this, the buy in from upper management to enforce forward thinking is just not there. It is a major cause of stress for me and my staff. Becasue we are a major Cancer Hospital, there are MANY hoops to jump through to get anything done, simple as well as more complex. For my staff I have instituted the "Results over Time" paradigm. I even have trouble with staff buying into it, giving me PTO slips for two hours if time taken for a family issue. I give it right back to them and never send it through. This is done "under the radar" at the moment.
