In the July 14, 2008 issue of Computerworld, there is a short news item called Don't Stress Out About Calling In Sick.  (You have to scroll down the page to find it.)  In it they talk about a tool called Voice Risk Analysis (VRA) that is supposed to be able to tell if you are lying when calling in sick.  Just think about the threat this poses to the employee.  VRA measures fluctuations in your voice that might indicate stress, that might indicate you are lying.  Gee, sometimes being sick or having a sick child causes stress.  This is sure to introduce a new kind of craziness to the workplace!  What do you think?

Oh my goodness - when will this madness end? This reminds us of the monitoring some companies are setting up in some people's homes to make sure they are really working when they are telecommuting.

The traditional work environment will fight very hard to stay alive with things like this - and it's up to us to keep change moving on the other side.

It is very distressing to read things like this article (I get this magazine at work as well and was shocked to read it). The control some companies want to put on their work force is unbelievable to me, but with the state of economy and the 6% unemployment the power is in the companies hands at the moment. True change is just starting, so I am sure nothing will happen significantly in our personal work lifespan, but perhaps we can be the catalyst for the next generation, who seem to be in this mind set already.
